The Dwight Schar College of Nursing Alumni Association held their annual banquet on September 26, 2014, at the Brown Derby Roadhouse in Ontario.  There were approximately 60 alumni in attendance from Mansfield General Hospital School of
Nursing, MedCentral College of Nursing and AU Dwight Schar College of Nursing.

The primary function of the nursing alumni association is to raise money for student scholarships and to support other activities of the nursing students.  This year the alumni were able to give three $1000 scholarships.  Winners were chosen by the alumni executive board based on an essay each applicant wrote answering the question "What are the qualities of a good nurse and how do you meet that criteria".  The students receiving the scholarships were Robyn Siburt, Justin McMahon and Charles Murray.

Patti Clayburn and Billie Maglott, Clinical Assistant Professors at the college of nursing, traveled to Albuquerque, New Mexico, from 10/20-10/25 to the University of New Mexico Mentoring Conference to present research from our College of Nursing's Peer-to-Peer Mentoring program.

The research shows the college of nursing increasing retention of nursing students at a percentage of 86%, a number even larger than the University retention level as a whole. Qualitative results from the research show how important the mentoring program is to freshmen nursing students who receive support from sophomore, junior, and/or senior nursing students. Upper classmen receive benefits as well when providing support and friendship to freshmen students.

The Peer-to-Peer Mentoring program kicks off this year Wednesday, Oct. 29th, on the Ashland campus with a mixer and scavenger hunt.

The Dwight Schar College of Nursing had a wonderful surprise visitor this afternoon. Helen Wappner,  a 1936 graduate from the Mansfield General School of Nursing, dropped by to tour the new facility and visit with fellow nursing alum, students and staff. Helen mentioned that much has changed from when she was a nursing student but stopped by the familiar mirror noting that "you always looked at yourself before leaving to be sure you are appropriately dressed". Helen turned 99 this year and was very happy to stop by to visit.

The Dwight Schar College of Nursing and Health Sciences hosted a "Let's Get Ugly" Christmas party last week. The Student Nurses Association, SCRUBS Society, Living Learning Community, and Peer Mentoring groups planned the event. Students from the Nursing, Dietetics, Exercise Science, and Athletic Training were all represented at the party. Students wore their ugliest Christmas gear and mixed and mingled with their peers and instructors while eating some homemade goodies. Faculty planned Stress Reducing activities to help students prepare for finals and at the end of the evening prizes were given out to students. A good time was had by all!

Each year Ashland University Board of Trustees recognizes 8 mentors based on nominations by students. These letters are reviewed by the Academic Affairs Committee and the Board of Trustees and the top 8 are selected. Brenda DeHaan was awarded this honor this year and was nominated by senior nursing student Victoria Gill. Victoria's letter is a touching and wonderful reflection of Professor DeHann's committment to students.

Victoria's letter:

"Professor Brenda DeHaan is deeply committed to being an excellent teacher and truly forms a relationship with each and every one of her students. She has proven to be the greatest mentor I have had at this university. Upon my arrival to the hospital, I received my patient assignment and I almost fell over. My patient had numerous problems with a lot that I had never dealt with before. Professor DeHaan simply replied, "You'll be fine, I'm right here, I know you can do this!" When I have a bad day or feel like I cannot make it through nursing school, Professor DeHaan is he first person I would want to talk to. She has such a compelling, caring, nurturing personality. She helps students learn skills, but at the same time is always there for them when they have any problems, whether it is school, home, emotional, whatever it is she is always willing to help."

Congratulations Brenda!

Post licensure students and faculty from the College of Nursing and Health Sciences joined over 400 Registered Nurses at Nurses Day at the Statehouse (NDASH) in Columbus Ohio on February 18, 2015. NDASH is organized by the Ohio Nurses Association and sponsored by many professional nursing organizations and educational programs. On this day, nurses have the opportunity to learn about current health related legislative initiatives and information; listen to the stories of nurse advocates who have successfully implemented change; attend legislative committees and hearings or two or the Ohio Statehouse; learn about effective communication with elected officials; and discuss healthcare issues with legislators in attendance.

Nine students in the RN to BSN Program and one student in the DNP Program attended, along with two faculty members.
